We operate an appointment system to allow you to be seen at a set time. Booked appointments are usually ten minutes long. This is enough time for one major or two minor problems. However if you have a number of problems to discuss, please, either make a double appointment or spread them out over a number of consultations. This will help your doctor run his surgery on time and minimises waiting for other patients.

Patients who have an urgent problem will always be seen on the same day. We offer all patients an appointment within 24 hours of phoning usually on the same day, although if you phone in the afternoon you may be offered an appointment the next day. If you ring early on the day and can attend in the morning it helps us keep slots available for patients who need emergency treatment in the afternoons.

Please feel free to book your appointment with whichever doctor or nurse you would like help with a particular problem. If you wish to see a specific doctor you may have to wait a few days as not all doctors are in every day.

If you have difficulty with communication then please ask for a double appointment.

We will endeavour to give you an appointment with the doctor of your choice, but this may not always be possible, in which case you will be offered an appointment with whichever doctor is free.

Please inform us as soon as possible if you are unable to keep your appointment so that it can be allocated to another patient.
 
 

Home Visits

Whenever possible we ask you to come to the surgery for appointments. At the surgery we have full access to your records and to treatment facilities.  You can usually be seen sooner if you can come to the surgery. We can see 3 or 4 patients in the surgery in the time it takes to do one home visit.
 
If you are really too unwell to come in please try to phone before 11am. If you are unsure whether you need a visit reception can arrange for you to get advice from one of the doctors. If the doctor feels your problem would be appropriately dealt with in the surgery then you will be offered an appointment and the visit request declined.
 
The doctors squeeze visits in between morning and afternoon surgeries but also have to fit in other clinics and meetings during this time so the timing of a visit cannot be guaranteed.

Requests for emergency visits later during the day will be passed on to the duty doctor who will talk to you to help decide the best way to manage the problem.

The nurses will also give telephone advice, although you may be asked for a contact number for them to phone back if they are busy when you call.

Telephone Consultations

How can I speak to a doctor?

You may leave a message with our reception staff if you would like to speak to a doctor. That doctor will contact you after seeing patients at the surgery.

Please note that all of the doctors work three or four days at the surgery so if your concerns are urgent, please make sure that you have made this clear to the reception staff, and the doctors on duty will deal with your request.

Please leave a landline number rather than a mobile if possible.

How can I leave a message for a doctor?

You can leave a telephone message with our reception staff, or a written message that will be passed on to the docotr for him or her to contact you after seeing patients in surgery.

Please bear in mind, the doctor you may wish to speak to, may not be in that day. If your message is urgent, please make sure that you have made this clear to the reception staff, and the doctors on duty at the surgery will deal with your message that day.

Teaching & Training

We are a teaching practice and frequently have supervised doctors, nursing and medical students training at the surgery.

We will ask if you are willing to see these students. This is voluntary. Please feel free to decline if you are not happy with the idea.

When Should I See A Health Care Assistant?

Our HCAs are trained phlebotomists (people that take blood samples) and see patients for blood tests in daily walk-in clinics and booked appointments. They will also see patients for blood pressure checks and weight etc. In addition they assist the GPs in undertaking minor procedures and are valuable members of the nursing team.

When Should I See A Nurse?

Our practice nurses see patients for blood tests, blood pressure, urine tests, diabetic checks, dietary advice, ear syringing, treatment of minor injuries, dressings and cervical smears. They can give you advice about immunisations and first aid for travel abroad.
